Etapa 59

Recorrido por el sendero de los Apalaches (Appalachian Trail), a su paso por el estado de Virginia (Estados Unidos), en sentido de sur a norte. Desde la intersección del sendero con la ruta VA-621, junto al Craig Creek, hasta la intersección con la ruta VA-620 (Miller Cover Rd) / Trout Creek.

La etapa se corresponde con la segunda parte de la sección 29 del Appalachian Trail, en el estado de Virginia, según la distribución oficial de etapas en este estado, y se desarrolla íntegramente en el interior del espacio natural protegido conocido como ¨Brush Mountain East Wilderness¨, que forma parte del inmenso George Washington Jefferson National Forest.

Iniciamos el recorrido a escasos metros del Craig Creek, pequeño río que atraviesa el valle homónimo, formado entre la Sinking Creek Mountain y la Brush Mountain.

En sus primeros tramos, el sendero discurre por terrenos que forman el lecho del valle, muy llanos y con toda la apariencia de ser susceptibles de inundación en caso de desbordamiento del río, pero al cabo de un kilómetro y medio, aproximadamente, comienza un gradual y a veces serpenteante ascenso por la ladera norte de la Brush Mountain.

No hay ningún obstáculo, ni dificultad técnica en la ruta, aunque es preciso salvar el desnivel de algo más de 1.500 pies, que existe entre el valle y la cresta de la montaña.

A medida que ganamos altura, la perspectiva nos ofrece algunas interesantes vistas panorámicas, y ya en la cima encontramos una ancha franja sin árboles, a modo de cortafuegos, utilizada como amplio camino que sigue la cresta de oeste a este, justo por la línea divisoria entre los condados de Craig y de Roanoke. La presencia de algunos bancos de madera en este trayecto, contribuye a aumentar la sensación de caminar por un plácido paseo.

Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), passing through the state of Virginia (United States), in a south-north direction. From the intersection of the trail with the VA-621 route, next to Craig Creek, to the intersection with VA-620 (Miller Cover Rd) / Trout Creek.

The stage corresponds to the second part of section 29 of the Appalachian Trail, in the state of Virginia, according to the official distribution of stages in this state, and is developed entirely within the protected natural space known as "Brush Mountain East Wilderness" ¨, which is part of the immense George Washington Jefferson National Forest.

We start the tour a few meters from Craig Creek, a small river that crosses the homonymous valley, formed between Sinking Creek Mountain and Brush Mountain.

In its first sections, the path runs through land that form the bed of the valley, very flat and with all the appearance of being susceptible to flooding in case of river overflow, but after about a kilometer and a half, a gradual and sometimes meandering up the northern slope of Brush Mountain.

There is no obstacle, nor technical difficulty in the route, although it is necessary to save the difference of something more than 1,500 feet, which exists between the valley and the crest of the mountain.

As we gain altitude, the perspective offers us some interesting panoramic views, and already at the top we find a wide strip without trees, as a firewall, used as a broad path that follows the ridge from west to east, just along the dividing line between Craig and Roanoke counties. The presence of some wooden benches in this path, contributes to increase the feeling of walking on a peaceful walk.
