Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), as it passes through the state of Virginia (United States), in the area called Central Virginia, from south to north. From the bridge located on the banks of the mighty New River (in the town of Pearisburg, VA), to the Pine Swamp Branch Shelter.
The New River is an important tributary of the Kanawha River, which in turn flows into the Ohio River, and this into the extensive and mighty Mississippi River, whose hydrographic basin is the largest in North America and the third largest in the world, after those of the Amazon. and the Congo.
The stage corresponds to the second part of section 33 of the AT, according to the official distribution of stages of the Appalachian Trail, as it passes through Virginia, and most of its route runs through the protected natural area of Peters Mountain Wilderness, which is part of the immense George Washington Jefferson National Forest.
The tour begins at what is possibly the ugliest point of the entire Appalachian Trail, due to the presence of a large textile fiber production factory, owned by Hoechst Celanese, located on the banks of the New River, a few meters from the path.
As a way of discharging the unwelcome presence of the industrial complex, it should be noted that it is the largest center of employment in the entire region, and that the company that owns it has made significant financial contributions to the maintenance of the Appalachian Trail, which has allowed, among other things, that the path was completely diverted in 2014, with a current layout that quickly takes it away from the factory, following to the east, at a certain distance and from above, the course of one of the meanders that the river forms.
Shortly thereafter, the AT turns north and climbs Hemlock Ridge, before crossing VA-641, Clendennin Road, and Pocahontas Road, where it begins a gradual climb to the crest of Peters Mountain, with some rocky sections and staggered
Upon reaching the top with few trees and good grass, at a point known as Rice Fields (3,383 feet) there is a shelter of the same name (Rice Fields Shelter) that allows you to enjoy splendid panoramic views to the east and west of the ridge.
