Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), as it passes through the state of Georgia (United States), from south to north. Section 15, between Woody Gap (located at the intersection of the trail with Route 60), and Neel Gap (located at the intersection with US Routes -19 & 129), always within the immense Chattahoochee National Forest .
The weather conditions are those of the month of February, with temperatures below zero, and some accumulated snow, especially on the slopes and other more shaded areas of the route, which makes it necessary to use microspikes in some icy sections, but the day is very sunny.
The march begins at the intersection of the trail with Route 60, at the point known as Woody Gap, located at an altitude of 3,172 feet, and which has a large parking area, restrooms and space for camping.
From Woody Gap, heading north, the trail ascends to Lunsford Gap and the small hill of Big Cedar Mountain (3,737 ft), from where there are excellent panoramic views to the south and east.

The trail then descends for approximately 3 km, continuously and gradually, until shortly after the junction with the Dockery Lake Trail, which heads south to the lake of the same name.
From that lowest point on the trail, the Appalachian Trail begins a slow, gradual climb of over 5 miles. away, towards the top of the main TA summit in the state of Georgia: Blood Mountain (4,450 feet), surrounded in its vicinity by a dense forest of rhododendrons, mountain laurel and azaleas.

Blood Mountain's name recalls a bloody battle that took place in this area between the Cherokee and Creek Indian tribes.
The ascent to the top of Blood Mountain, from both Neel Gap and Woody Gap, is one of the most frequented routes for hikers and visitors, throughout the year.
At the very top there is an interesting stone shelter, built in the 30s of the last century, known as Blood Mountain Shelter, and from there, on the rocky platform of the summit, you can see a magnificent panoramic view in all directions. .

The descent from Blood Mountain to Neel Gap is rocky and quite steep, although the entire trail is well-groomed, stair-stepped in places, and prepared to welcome the several thousand walkers who trek this section throughout the year.

Already at the end of the stage, in Neel Gap, the Mountain Crossings , integrated into the Walasi-Yi Center complex , offers accommodation in a mountain lodge, with bunk beds, bathroom, heating (gas and electric), small kitchen with microwave, washer, dryer and sitting area. A pleasant place to spend the night, with a reasonable price. In the same place there is an important supply store for mountain and hiking equipment, which allows the necessary supplies.
