New York City It is the most populated city in the United States and one of the most populated and important in the world, with an urban area of twenty-four million inhabitants. Since the end of the 19th century it has been one of the centers of world politics and economy, housing the headquarters of the United Nations Organization and numerous companies and financial institutions of global importance. New York exerts global influence in media, politics, education, architecture, entertainment, arts and fashion. For all these reasons, it is considered one of the most globalized cities on the planet, with great cultural diversity.

The city is made up of five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

Etymology:

In 1664, the town was named in honor of the Duke of York, who would become King James II of England. James' older brother, King Charles II, made the duke owner of the former territory of New Netherlands, including the city of New Amsterdam, when England seized it from the Dutch.

First European settlements:

At the time of its European discovery, in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, the region was inhabited by around five thousand indigenous people of the Lenape tribe. This Italian explorer in the service of the French crown called it Nouvelle Angoulême (New Angoulême). European settlement began in 1614 in the hands of the Dutch and in 1626, the colony's chief, Peter Minuit, purchased the island of Manhattan from the Lenape (the legend, now refuted, has it that for glass beads worth 24 Dollars). The place would be renamed Nieuw Amsterdam and specialized in the fur trade. In 1664, the English conquered the city in battle with the Dutch and renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York and Albany. At the end of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch gained control of Suriname, in exchange for the English controlling New Amsterdam. By the year 1700, the Lenape population had been reduced to two hundred inhabitants.

Environment:

Central Park, in Manhattan, is the most visited urban park in the United States.
Public transportation use in New York is the highest in the United States and fuel consumption is at the same level as the national average in 1920. New York's dense population and low dependence on automobiles helped place the city among the most efficient consumers of energy in the country. Greenhouse gas emissions are relatively low when measured per capita, at 7.1 cubic tons per person, below the national average of 24.5. New Yorkers are responsible for one percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, despite being 2.7% of the national population. The average New Yorker consumes less than half the electricity of a San Francisco resident and nearly a quarter of that of a Dallas resident.

The city has recently tried to reduce its environmental impact. The large amounts of pollution in New York led to a high rate of asthma and other respiratory ailments among its inhabitants. vNew York also has the largest fleet of hybrid buses or buses equipped with compressed natural gas in the country, as do some of the first hybrid taxis.

New York gets its drinking water from the Catskill Mountains. This origin with a natural filtering process makes New York one of the five major cities in the United States with drinking water pure enough that it does not need purification treatment through water treatment plants.

Route description:

This urban route is one of many that my wife Adela and I took during our long stay in New York City, in June of last year 2023.

This urban walk was a daily experience as we discovered the immensity of this city that never sleeps..., and that left us amazed at every step through its streets, neighborhoods and avenues.

I confess that the vitality of its streets, which we joined as passers-by, did not convey any rush to us, but that we walked at our own pace, inventing our own itinerary.

We have found a safe and hospitable city, where you can eat healthy and well, with an excellent transport and communications network.

Culturally it is an amazing city.

A very interesting experience that will possibly lead us to visit New York again.

See you soon New York!

2nd Avenue

Second Avenue (in English: Second Avenue) is an avenue on the East Side of Manhattan, in New York City. It extends from Houston Street at its southern end to Harlem River Drive at 128th Street at its northern end. A one-way street, vehicular traffic on Second Avenue goes southbound, except for one block in Harlem. South of Houston Street, the road continues as Chrystie Street to Canal Street. A bike lane exists in the left lane from 125th Street to Houston Street. The section between 55th and 34th streets closes a gap in the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway. Second Avenue passes through several Manhattan neighborhoods, including (from south to north) the Lower East Side, East Village, Stuyvesant Square, Kips Bay, Tudor City, Turtle Bay, East Midtown, Lenox Hill, Yorkville and Spanish Harlem.

Lexington Avenue

Lexington Avenue, often colloquially abbreviated to "Lex", is an avenue on the East Side of Manhattan in New York City. The parkway carries southbound one-way traffic from East 131st Street to Gramercy Park at East 21st Street. Along its 5.5-mile (8.9-kilometer) and 110-block route, Lexington Avenue runs through Harlem, Carnegie Hill, the Upper East Side, Midtown, and Murray Hill to a point of origin centered on Gramercy Park. South of Gramercy Park, the axis continues as Irving Place from 20th Street to East 14th Street. Lexington Avenue was not one of the streets included in the street grid of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, so the cross street addresses do not begin at an even number of one hundred, as they do with the avenues that were originally part of the plan.

    Fuerte abrazo 🤗
