255) Cemetery & Trig Hill Loop - 10th June 2019 - NEW
Return Distance 2.1km, Max Elevation 613m, Climb 10m, Time 1hr, Level - Easy - Pops
Co-ordinates: -23.672740, 133.887060
My Blog:
This is an absolutely fascinating and historic area, with the walks a bonus. We took time out to visit the station buildings and the stories they tell. Given the amount of information available, I guess the 'Post Office' was articulate in recording what happened here.
Short Description:
This is a hugely historic area and this walk, with its interpretive signs, takes you out to the cemetery and around the immediate area, up Trig Hill and back to the Telegraph Station.
Getting there:
Travel north from Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway and after 4km, turn right into Herbert Heritage Drive and follow this to the Telegraph Station car park.
Maps:
Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historic Reserve
Route/Trail notes
This walk starts from the Telegraph Station Cafe (signposted) and heads north out across the car park and joins the Larapinta Trail (section 1) to the Cemetery, where just five people (all named) were buried. Just beyond this, take the marked track to the right towards Trig Hill. This track meanders across the scrub, up Trig Hill and down the other side back to the Historic Precinct.
Permits/Costs
None.
Other References/Comments:
Take time out while you are here and explore (fee applies) the restored Telegraph Station precinct, it is well worth the visit.
Various walking and cycle/mountain bike tracks branch out from the historic Telegraph Station, including the starting point for the Larapinta Trail (Section 1), Riverside, Stuart, Spencer Hill and Bradshaw Walks. To the west, there are also shared mountain bike trails, including, Llentye, Arrwe, Tyape and Apwelantye.
