We are 4 belgian mountaineerers and we are planning a trip to spitrbergen in april 2014.
We are looking for some practical information.
Is there a tourist information wher we can by some recent maps ?
Is it possible to rent a gun and a boat or do you have to go with a guide?

Hello,
Yes there is a tourist information office. As far as I know it is not possible to go outside of the inhabited areas without a guide, because of the polar bears. You need a special training to be sure you have done everything to avoid them attacking you, because they are so much protected that you will have big problems if you had to kill one, even if it is to save your life.
