My Blog:
You climb the rock and then want to walk around it on the same day, are you crazy? Well, we cheated a bit and cycled most of it, whilst stopping to explore Mutitjulu Waterhole and Kantju Gorge etc.
Short Description:
Escape the crowds and take a meandering journey through acacia woodlands and grassed clay pans. Discover the diverse plants, animals and geological features of the park. From Kuniya Piti you can follow the snake-like grooves along the base of the rock where Kuniya journeyed to Mutitjulu Waterhole. Encounter bloodwoods, native grasses and waterways. The Base Walk is the best way to fully appreciate the natural and cultural beauty of Uluru.
Getting there:
Travel into the National Park from Yulara and head to the Mala car park (signposted) at the base of Uluru.
Maps:
Uluru and Kata Tjuta Visitor Guide
Route/Trail notes:
From the car park, turn to the left or right and follow the well defined track around the base of Uluru back to the start. Detouring into Kantju Gorge and Mutitjulu Waterhole on the way.
Permits/Costs:
Admission to the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park costs $25 per adult (2019) and provides a three or more day pass. Passes are non-transferable and are scanned/checked at the Ranger Station.
Other References/Comments:
You have a few different options to circumnavigate Uluru: walk, cycle, segway or drive.
There are three other walks in and around the base of Uluru; Uluru Summit (3.5km - till 26th October 2019), Mala Walk (2km) and Mutitjulu Waterhole (5km), as well as the sunrise and sunset viewing platforms.
Don't forget your fly mesh!
