Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), as it passes through the states of North Carolina and Tennessee (United States), from south to north.
The stage starts from the Groundhog Creek Shelter, ending at the Walnut Mountain Shelter, and corresponds to section 16.1 and 15.2 of the trail, in accordance with the official distribution of stages in the state of Tennessee, although in a good part of the route, the trail It follows the border line between the states of Tennessee and North Carolina.
At this stage, the Appalachian Trail passes, among other outstanding places, through the top of Max Patch (4,629 feet) and Walnut Mountain.
Originally, the Appalachian Trail bypassed the cleared crest of the Max Patch, which was private property. Its extraordinary panoramic views were frequently sought after by hikers who came to the place on foot or by car, and who, in order to access the summit, paid their owner a kind of right of way (a quarter of a dollar for hikers, and half a dollar for the vehicles).
The place, which is currently public property, was once used as pasture, and even as a runway for landing and taking off small planes.
From this privileged vantage point, which continues to attract many visitors, you can see a 360º panoramic view, which includes a good perspective of Mt. Mitchell (6,684 feet) and the Black Mountains, to the east, as well as some other peaks of the Smoky Mountains.
