Itinerary description
Very nice stage. One of our favorite! Landscape changes gradually, leaving a vast lowland with superb views on mount Amiata to reach a charming countryside. On your way a nice picnic area with view and shade (way point). You will then reach Proceno which is a typical village. Nice bar which also offers pizzas (way point). Final ascent to Acquapendente is short but steep, on a country road with little traffic. Acquapendente is a "strategical" point on via Francigena: you have a direct bus line to Siena and can also easily reach Roma (bus to Viterbo and then train to Roma).
We stayed at Hotel il Borgo. Simple hotel, but ok and only 200 meters away from bus stop to go to Siena (one bus a day leaving shortly before 7:00 AM). Bus line to siena is 57 P, company Autolinee Toscane (timetables www.at-bus.it/it/linee-e-orari/grosseto-extraurbano-57p). Restaurant il Borgo is very good.
We temporarily stopped our trip to Roma in Acquapendente. We went back to Siena Train station by bus where we had left our car (secure parking at the price of only 2 € per day).
The project: walk from San Miniato to Roma following via Francigena. We are targeting stages of 15 kilometres or less (up to 20 kilometres maximum) / 400 meters uphill maximum. We would like to sleep in decent hotels/B&B, enjoy good food and wine! A tip that changed our life after we discovered it: you can have your luggage carried from one hotel to the next by Bags Free (a small and reliable company we highly recommend) all along Via Francigena.
