Itinerary description
I left Canyon of Defiance, moving briskly, and reached Portals Canyon after 4 hours.
I wanted to explore an alternative to Eagle Gorge, because I wasn't sure about doing the awkward bit solo in the downstream direction (I'm happy to do it in the upstream direction). So I followed the other branch of the creek that joins up downstream of Eagle Gorge. Compared to Eagle Gorge, the other branch is slower and more energetic because it involves an ascent and descent as well as some tiresome vegetation, but it's straightforward.
I have visited the attractive Ellery Creek West Branch Loops a few times before, so this time I took the rough track that cuts off one of the loops and saves 15 minutes.
I had planned to camp on the old 4WD track where large parties have camped before. However a bull was guarding this area and I decided to collect water from Milton Park Gorge and retreat to a sandy campsite on Ellery Creek East Branch.
