Itinerary description
Probably the easiest of Colorado’s 14ers.
The western trailhead (Iowa Gulch) can be accessed from the nearby town of Leadville via a 3-mile unpaved road. In comparison, the eastern trailhead (Fourmile Creek) it’s 12 miles. We chose Iowa Gulch since it involved less unpaved road, and made it in a low-clearance sedan by going slowly and paying attention to the road.
The trail was very straightforward and easy to follow. The trail is commonly rated as YDS class 2. The part of the trail along the gulch, after entering San Isabel National Forest, was the steepest and most technical, for other sections I would rate as class 1.
The entire trip took me just over 4 hours, including a 35-minute break at the top and various breaks along the way. I moved slower than usual to accommodate my friend who was having trouble with the altitude.
