Itinerary description

A long day hike that I planned to make sure I was still in shape.

The hike started along Wilburn Ridge Trail, which featured a few rock scrambling sections that were exciting, based on east coast standards. It also offered the best views of the day.
Then I went onto the Appalachian Trail. Near Thomas Knob Shelter there was a water source, which was untreated spring water.
After the spur to Mount Rogers, Virginia’s highest point, Appalachian Trail was starting to get wet. I accidentally went onto Virginia Highland Horse Trail after the open meadows.
Mount Rogers Trail was narrow, tedious, and somewhat muddy towards the end.
Lewis Fork Trail was horrendously muddy. A total disaster.
There was water source at the intersection of Lewis Fork and Crest Trail.
Crest Trail was designed for ATVs, muddy at places.
Scales Trail was very wet at the beginning. I believed the Virginia Highland Horse Trial and Wilson Creek Trail in parallel to it would be dryer.
The Appalachian Trail back to the parking lot was decent.
