Itinerary description
It was extremely windy when we woke. The wind had blown a layer of red dust everywhere inside my tent, and it would be dangerous to continue along the skyline ridge to Mt Giles as we had planned.
We headed eastwards and made our way past Upper Giles Spring to Giles Yard Spring, then on to the Rigby Scoop Holes which have attractive vertical striations. We then made our way below the foothils to the "Giles Express Route" which avoids the constant up-down of the higher route and is at least half an hour faster.
Returning to the base of the range, I checked out the water situation in a number of the creeks. We camped downstream from Giles South West Spring, where the pool at the base of the trickling waterfall had good water, and the pool at the top of the waterfall had excellent water.
