Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit. Day 8: Millenium camp - Mweka gate
Sunday, October 13, 2019
Departure / Arrival: High, Millenium Camp (3,825 m) / Mweka gate (1,160 m)
Duration: 3.5 hours (Departure 06:20 - Arrival 10:00)
Distances and cumulative slope: 12 km, + 3 m / - 2,100 m
Difficulty: 1/5
Complete crossing: 2019.10.06-13 - Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit (8 days)
Eighth and last day of expedition, day of return to civilization.
With yesterday, it hasn't stopped raining all night. We are in the middle of October and the second wet season in Tanzania, called the "short rain" season, will begin shortly, from the beginning of November to December. We would like to avoid the flow of bearers and mountaineers who go up and down between Mweka gate and Mweka Camp so shortly after six in the morning, dressed in rain and backpacks protected with a waterproof cloth, we leave Millenium Camp. The road quickly loses height, while the fog around it permeates everything. A fine chirimiri falls.
Gradually, to the small trees covered with old beards - a type of lichen that hangs from the branches and trunks of the trees - there is a lush vegetation of large trees and arborescent ferns. Shortly before 7:30 we enter Mweka camp, at an altitude of 3,100 m. There, we make a small stop before returning to the road in the direction of Mweka gate. Everything is green, everything shines brightly in the middle of a magnificent tropical forest. At 10 o'clock we reach our goal where the van awaits us, which will return us to the local Moshi agency for the last steps and finally, to our hotel . Na kesho ni nyumbani, hakuna matata!
