Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit. Day 5: Pofu - Third Cave
Thursday, October 10, 2019
Departure / Arrival: Pufo camp (4,010 m) / Third Cave camp (3,965 m)
Duration: 3 hours (Departure 09:05 - Arrival 12:00)
Distances and cumulative slope: 6 km, + 200 m / - 250 m
Difficulty: 1/5
Complete crossing: 2019.10.06-13 - Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit (8 days)
Fifth day of expedition, 6h in the morning. The sun will soon rise and little by little the light is being made inside the store. We are in Pufo camp , halfway up the northern slope of Kilimanjaro; a good place to justify the North Circuit as a way of ascending to the roof of Africa.
For starters, the North Circuit is the longest ascension route and as such, it needs more days for its execution. An inconvenience for those who have a tight schedule but on the contrary, an advantage when it comes to achieving good acclimatization and achieving ideal conditions, both physical and mental, on the day of the summit. Not for nothing the Northern Circuit is the route that has the highest success rate in front of the Lemosho / Shira (8 days), Rongai (6/7 days), Machame (6/7 days) and Marangu (5/6 days) , and is that the formula of success is reduced, in large part, to the route you choose. The Lemosho Route, for example, was designed specifically for acclimatization: longer days, walking higher than the camps, better landscapes. Rongai is a great option for rainy days. While the low success rate and the agglomerations that can be found in Machame (colloquially the “Coca-Cola” route) and Marangu, are basically due to the desire of many to complete the summit as soon as possible, risking a more than likely bad Tall.
The North Circuit, in addition to being a long route, is sometimes reproached for its price (proportional to the number of days spent on the mountain), a greater instability of the weather (fog banks from Kenya during the wet season) , a lower mobile coverage during the tour (in fact, there will always be Safaricom as an authorized mobile network in the northern / Kenyan part), and the reduced size of the camps (for true mountaineers a real joy). In short, it is the preferred ascent route by agencies, guides and walkers for the beauty and diversity of their landscapes and because most of those who start it manage to complete it.
Now that dawn rises, this fifth day of expedition, the first thing I will do after dressing will be to take the camera and take advantage of this incredible place.
Note: in the North Circuit we spend two days between Moir Hut and Pufo camp (-200 m / 4h) and between Pufo camp and Third Cave (-150 m / 3h, at a slow pace), two days that if acclimatization seems satisfactory at Lower Lava Tower (4,600 m) could condense in a single day. An option that could be valued with the organization.
The truth is that only the landscape in Pufo at dawn justifies sleeping in this camp ...
The rest of the day is summarized by a quiet walk to Third Cave, enjoying the views and a path of great aesthetics.
After lunch, we take advantage of the time we have left and the favorable climate to take a small excursion to a viewpoint, halfway to the path of Kibo Hut. Fantastic views of the Uhuru Peak to the west, the Mawenzi peak (" Broken Peak ", in Swahili language) to the east, and over the sea of clouds that often forms above the Kenyan savanna to the north. An hour and a half in total, round trip, for a drop of about 150 m.
