Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit. Day 1: Lemosho gate - Mti Mkubwa
Sunday, October 6, 2019
Moshi - Lemosho Gate (2,370 m) (car)
Departure / Arrival: Lemosho Gate (2,370 m) - Mti Mkubwa (2,784 m)
Duration: 2 hours (Departure 15:30 - Arrival 17:40)
Distances and cumulative slope: 4.5 km, + 450 m / - 50 m
Difficulty: 2/5
Complete crossing: 2019.10.06-13 - Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit (8 days)
First day of issue; light day We set the alarm at 7:30 to have breakfast at eight. At 9 o'clock, Andrew, our guide, appears and we load the duffel bags into the van. In the back seats nine people wait patiently: nine porters, three for each of us!
We finish the last formalities with the hotel and shortly after 9 am, we take the main road from Moshi to Arusha where we will still make two stops: the first to buy a SIM card that will allow us to be in contact with the family for the next few days ($ 20 for 60 min / 10 Go), the second to buy fresh meat in a small roadside establishment for the first part of the expedition. Some members of the team take the opportunity to have breakfast there: soup, some chicken meat with vegetables and grilled liver tacos in a tapa, with salt and spicy tomato. The temperature on the terrace of the place is pleasant but the weather however is uncertain: we are at the beginning of October and the second wet season in Tanzania, called the "short rains" season, from the beginning of November to December will begin shortly. However, the probability of getting wet in the next few days is high ...
At the height of Boma Ng'ombe, about 25 kilometers from Moshi, we leave the main road by a dirt track that opens right in the savannah. Before walking, we must first stop at the Londorosi Gate (2,250 m) to register our entrance to the National Park and pay the corresponding entrance fee. Behind the office, in a large outdoor patio, all porters queue for, one by one, weigh the bulk they will carry on a large scale. The laws of the National Park are very strict in this regard and limit to 20 kilos the weight that a carrier can carry between their own personal effects, the part that corresponds to their clients' equipment and the necessary utensils for the camps. Once these procedures are finished, we all return to the van and return to the track in the opposite direction until the last crossing where we continue to Lemosho Gate, our starting gate (2,050 m). Upon arriving at the door, we unloaded the luggage and made the photo of rigor, finally, we started walking.
From Lemosho Gate, there is a steep path, muddy from the rains of recent days. We quickly gain altitude in a lush tropical forest and despite the effort our progression is agile, while we strive to walk well below our pace to ensure good acclimatization. At the moment, it seems that the weather is holding. Emerged from among the trees, suddenly we are surprised by a little monkey of Colobus guereza (black and white oriental colobus). The sky gradually opens until the end of the afternoon, finally, the sun rises. At 17:30 we arrive at the Mti Mkubwa camp, “Big Trees” in Swahili language (2,784 m), two hours barely after leaving Lemosho Gate. A large number of stores are already installed and a queue of mountaineers are waiting to register at a small National Park office. We also take turns and go to our camp that the porters have gladly ridden for us. A short briefing of the next day, a quick dinner and we ended up that first day with the desire to start the real mountain.
