I was on the hike with the submitter. I was the one that had us go the wrong way at Big Horse Gap. We actually got off the trail and followed the road back to our car at Sugar Run road. I had trouble finding much information about the availability of parking at Sugar Run road, but now I can tell you that there is parking for 4 or maybe 5 cars if they are parked carefully. We left a car there starting on Saturday evening and there were already 2 cars there. We hike up from Wapiti shelter and the first couple of miles were mostly uphill with several relatively short steep stretched. Wapiti shelter was dry inside and fairly nice. There is plenty of water as the shelter is across the trail from Dismal Creek. We came upon a small rattle snake (2&1/2 to 3 feet) lying beside the trail, but it was a cool day and the snake looked like it had recently eaten so it was moving quite slowly. We were getting off the trail that day so we were all moving pretty quickly to get back to the car and on to something other than Mountainhouse to eat.
