Day 9/10 - August 14, 2015:
Rumbak camp (4,355 m) - Zingchan camp (3,587 m)
Duration: 3 hours
Highlight: Rumbak camp (4,355 m)
Distances and accumulated difference in altitude: 11.5 km, -790 m
Full route: 2015.08.06-15 - Trek Stok Kangri, Ladakh (10 days)
The Rumbak Base camp is located high up in the valley, near the mountain. For that reason, the sun this morning takes longer than the other days to warm the cold air of the night. At 7:30 we had breakfast and an hour later we started the descent to the town of Rumbak, an hour's walk further down the valley. It is a small town of perhaps thirty houses, most of them destroyed, or in poor condition. A very poor town at first sight, whose only sustenance comes from agriculture and for a few years, tourism. Several houses, in fact, are dedicated to the accommodation of mountaineers, providing high-level services so that from here, going up the road to the hill of Stok La and staying overnight in the camp of Manikarmo, in two days the base camp is reached. the ascension of Stok Kangri. From Rumbak, we used a satellite phone to warn Leh about our position (5 rupees a minute) and we continued our way to a detour with the valley of Markha, still closed to tourism. From there we can see the damage caused by the heavy rains last July: crops gone, roads swallowed by the river leaving a huge hole in its place ... It will take months, maybe years, for things to come back here to your site.
A strange feeling for us after 10 days spent in the mountains is to see the influx of tourists here in the valley: apart from the Markha Valley, many routes converge here and make these roads are very busy. We hear English, French, German ... In an hour we reach the road under construction that in a few years will link the town of Rumbak to the valley of Leh, providing telephone, electricity, in short: civilization. Little by little we get together with more mountaineers for whom, also, the trek ends. We follow the Zingchan River, to the camp of the same name. Once here we regret not having asked for the services of a taxi to take us directly to Leh: the Zingchan camp is a dirty, uninteresting place, so different from the camps to which we are accustomed! Shortly before lunch we said goodbye to the muleteer. Our "singing" man, as we used to call him, because of his way of singing to the horses while he took care of them. He leaves with the animals and it is with a twinge to the heart that we see him crossing the river, and then walking away. Sing singing man, sing for others ... and for a long time!
