Day 7/10 - August 12, 2015:
Stok Kangri Base camp (5,046 m) - Stok The base (4,437 m)
Duration: 2:15 hours
Highlight: Stok Kangri base camp (5,046 m)
Distances and cumulative altitude: 6.5 km, +80 m / -700 m

Full route: 2015.08.06-15 - Trek Stok Kangri, Ladakh (10 days)

Ten hours of rest! Nothing less to recover from yesterday's ascension to Stok Kangri and to feel again in top form, with all our strength. When leaving the store in the morning we can not avoid looking at the sky and think about the companions who right now, should be approaching the summit. Will they have more luck than us and will they be able to enjoy the view? We wish it. Here in the base camp the sky is gray, more still around the summits. It is also cold. But you can not ask it to be hot at five thousand meters.
Next to the shop, our man "sing": this is how we baptized our muleteer for his way of singing to the horses while he unites the yoke. Today, a light day awaits us: downhill mainly to Manikarmo, then go back some three kilometers towards the pass of Stok La. We will not attack today the ascent to the hill, too high, too far to reach it in a single day from here. Instead, we'll set up the camp at Stok La Base, a hundred meters of altitude difference above the detour in the Stok valley. In total then, two and a half hours of walking enjoying the breathtaking views over the valley and the needle-shaped mountains that close it below, gigantic brick-colored gorge. Little more than to count for that "rest day".

In the afternoon, I take advantage of the free time in the camp to climb a hillside in search of sight: Stok La Base is in effect deeply embedded between dizzying slopes. I reach a nearby peak and discover a panoramic view of the summits that surround us all these days: from the base camp of Stok Kangri to the southwest; Manikarmo to the southeast with the pass of Matho La above, on the horizon; the grand valley of Stok from south to north; and finally behind me the hill of Stok La, very high to the northwest. At my feet some bushes of wild rubarba, plantago, and other medicinal flowers. A total enjoyment from my rack, between heaven and earth.
