Full route: 2015.08.06-15 - Trek Stok Kangri, Ladakh (10 days)

It's 7 o'clock in the morning when we wake up: a long night. "Jule, jule!" (Good morning!): Hot tea at the door of the store. The little difficulty of the day means that today we have decided to leave at 8 o'clock in the morning, one hour after the usual schedule. But today, something unexpected happens: our muleteer, left as every day at 4 o'clock in the morning to go pick up the horses in the bush, has not yet returned. Time passes and everyone, looking towards the mountain, we wait ... At 10: 30h finally, from a slope to which we have climbed to get a better view, we finally spotted our man. Returning alone, to our field. Nothing! In 6 hours, traveling up and down the mountain, it has not been possible to find the animals. It looks furious. Without another explanation to explain the event, he tells us that the animals will probably have returned at night to their "home", the village of Stok in the valley, instead of grazing around the camp. A group of mountaineers descending asks them to send other horses while we, little by little, will begin the ascent towards the base camp. We are well acclimatized and the climb becomes enjoyable. On the way, another group that comes to us tells us that soon in the morning, some horses have been found in the base camp ... six horses! Responding to the characteristics of ours. That day, our muleteer will have had to travel the whole mountain in search of the animals, from 4 o'clock in the morning, to then go up to the base camp and pick up the horses there, go back down to load the material in Manikarmo, to end climb again to the base camp. Hard work, for a man of 55 years ...

The first view of the base camp is expectant. Located at 5,000 meters for two peaks of more than 6 thousand and a few secondary ones, full of tents. People having made some ascension the night before and now sleeping, people arriving with that same intention and looking in the little space available, some place to sleep. In the middle of all this a "parachute", providing hot and cold food to all these people, as well as various basic elements such as tobacco, batteries, etc.
Little by little, the sky grows darker and around five o'clock in the afternoon, it starts to rain. A fine rain that we hope will not last long. Then the temperature drops and when a quarter of an hour later our guide arrives at the camp for the next day's ascension, threatening clouds have been hooked to the surrounding peaks. Our "lama", or "climbing guide" in English, is called Puspa: a man of 25 years. We immediately established a good relationship. The ascension, if time permits, will be for tonight.
