Full route: 2015.08.06-15 - Trek Stok Kangri, Ladakh (10 days)

It is 6 o'clock in the morning and the sun outside the store invites us to leave. Half an hour later, we would almost be forced to do it as much as the morning sun warms that latitude of the planet. A radiant sun then, in the field of Mathu Phu. While we wash and drink the first tea of the morning, the shepherd of the "doksa" (place accommodated by the shepherds to watch over his flock during the summer) located next to the camp comes to free the donkeys while from the mountain, they return the muleteers with the horses. We have slept here about four expeditions and indeed, every night, the muleteers release the animals so that they go free to graze on the mountain. In this way, the horses that during the day help to transport the material, feed at night, forcing the "horsemen", as they are usually called, to position themselves every day at 4 o'clock in the morning on top of the hill High to locate them, and go in your search. Piece works!
Matho Phu is located in a spectacular site: a vast meadow of grass, crossed by an artificial stream for the different tasks of cleaning, cleaning the vajía, etc. and surrounded by an arid steppe. In the distance, a curtain of sharp mountains: the scene of Manikarmo. The term "Matho Phu" could mean something like "hill between the rivers of Matho", the town located further down the valley. A hill between two rivers, the first one we crossed yesterday, arriving from the Yonchela hill, with the water from which we prepared dinner, and another one beyond the camp with the turbid waters, laden with sediment.

Today a light day awaits us. Without crossing the second river we went up the camp, directly towards the mountain. During the ascent, we feel that we are approaching the Stok Kangri because of the influx of walkers we are encountering. The climb is progressive, without being too strong. At 11 o'clock in the morning Gombo, our guide, asks us if we are "hungry". What an odd hour to eat ... And soon, we understand that man does not know how to delay our arrival to Manikarmo any longer! Half an hour later we reached the hill of Matho La, at 4,959 meters high. To our left, a chain of mountains protruding from behind: the Stok Kangri, the immaculate peak. The wind blows and we wrap ourselves while we take some food. We are entertained by a reflection on the crosses that we are accustomed to find in Europe at the top of the mountains and in the hills, relics covered in an omnipresent religion. Here they are replaced by Tibetan flags, rectangular colored fabrics that spread their prayers to the winds of the Himalayas. After the rest we started the long descent behind the hill and in about an hour, we reached Manikarmo.

On the descent, shortly after the pass we find a detour to the left that climbs the mountain that faces us before getting lost higher up, like a clear line on the ground. It is a direct access to the base camp of the Stok Kangri. This path could have been an option for us: with it, it is accessed in about 7 hours from the camp of Matho Phu to the base camp, five thousand meters high. While we, we chose to go down to a lower height in the Manikarmo camp, at 4,490 meters. Why make this decision? Traditionally, the ascents for Stok Kangri (6,153 m) are usually scheduled at twelve o'clock at night. After 7 hours walking, between Matho Phu located at 4,490 meters and the base camp at 5,000 meters (about 1,200 meters of altitude), mountaineers who enter by direct route are often forced to rest a night before undertaking the ascent. A whole night's rest then, followed by a day in the base camp with the conditions that it entails, for an ascension on the second day. Our other option, on the other hand, to descend from Matho La (4,959 m) at a lower altitude, at Manikarmo (4,375 m), first helps to better acclimatize and allows us to reach the fresh base camp, for an ascension in an equal period of time. two days the next day.

Manikarmo is in an exceptional place, at the intersection of three pseudovalles: Stok's first, closed down by a narrow gorge of sharp mountains; the valley of Matho La by which we have just arrived, going down from Matho Phu; and the valley that descends from the base camp at last, bed of a stormy river. A slope in front of the field offers an exceptional perspective on Manikarmo, on the gorge below to our right and just ahead, above some nearby peaks, on the Stok Kangri standing out from among the other peaks. It is 13h, the sun is scorching. Going back from Stok, groups of mountaineers arrive one by one to Manikarmo and in the space of two hours, the field is saturated. Small spaces drawn on the ground delimit a small plot of land to house a tent. The toilet-shops, on the other hand, are relegated to the periphery of the camp.
We have arrived soon so, we enjoy a privileged location in the center of Manikarmo. We enjoy our free time to observe how the cooks do their work, how they clean the vegetables in a stream concentrated by the neck of a plastic bottle. Diverse observations, reflections on recurrent themes of life, a time to clean up and quickly, it is already done at night. With an endless number of stars. The place is really spectacular and before we get into the store, we spend a few moments to fix it in our camera. One by one the stores are turning off: green, orange, blue ... it's time to go to rest.
