Full route: 2015.08.06-15 - Trek Stok Kangri, Ladakh (10 days)

Second day of the trek. It is seven o'clock in the morning and the sun is already breaking through the white cloth-covered windows of our room, in the Shabo house. After a copious dinner the previous day in the traditional Ladakhi style kitchen, with its decorated metal stove, the carpets on the floor and the well-ordered utensils on the shelves on the wall, we spent a fantastic ten-hour night, almost of the pull (21h-7h). When they wake the clouds have left, leaving a sky that promises a good day. The horses have not yet arrived and we wonder at what height of the road they will have been retained, blocked by the strong floods of the river in the previous days. After breakfast at 8 o'clock, our guide decides to go down to meet him and with Olga we stay to visit the surroundings of the small village. The wait will be long, almost until twelve o'clock and the nerves suffer when arriving from the Nimaling valley, above Shang Sumdo, another couple of hikers explains how their horses fell into the river and died the previous day, leaving them with difficulties to follow the path. And Tenzin, who had told us it would take two hours ... To pass the time we climbed the slope above Shang Sumdo when finally, far down the valley, appear. The horses first, followed by our guide who comes to say hello to us: a little boring ?, he asks us.
We load the food for the midday and finally, we take the road that goes back, towards the west, in the direction of Shang Phu. It's twelve hours past and the sun falls hard on our heads ... Really, it's not time to start walking!
As we move forward, we find a spectacular landscape: the valley, green with wheat crops and grass for animals, opens in a V shape over a horizon of snow-capped mountains. Later, the river occupies all the space again and the crops gradually give way to the trees, growing directly in the course of the river. Numerous houses are scattered on both sides of the valley, all depending on Shang Sumdo: a total of about 200 souls, scattered in small villages around the river. Like yesterday, the same destruction, caused by the floods: in ten years, Ladakh had not known similar. The road for the most part has disappeared, swallowed by the waters and only occasionally isolated in a mound of grass remains some electric pillar, last vestige of a civilization below. Calladitos, we enjoy the shades of green that surround us since probably rarely in the next few days will we find so much vegetation. We also noticed the effects of height. And because we did not have time to load the horses with our belongings we carried enough weight on our shoulders. Little by little the valley closes and fits between powerful brick-colored mountains. On several occasions we must take off our boots and cross the river, with great caution, the sandals on our feet and after about five hours we arrive at Shang Phu, our second camp. The horses have finally overtaken us and several stores are already assembled when we arrived. The tea is getting warmer, it's time to rest ...
