Waypoints

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,585 ft

Through gate

This is a heavy gate which leans up against a tree trunk, it is usually kept closed to prevent cattle from passing.

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,520 ft

Campobuches dam

This is a small dam in the middle of the woodland, an ideal place to take a break and look out for dragonflies and terrapins during the summer months, and kingfishers all year round. Continue along the footpath keeping the reservoir and later the river on your right (do not cross over the bridge).

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,447 ft

Through gate

The wide track ends here and you pass via a small gate onto a footpath through the woods. You are about to pass from the Málaga province into Cádiz and from the Serranía de Ronda hills into the Cádiz mountains.

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,324 ft

Straight

Note the lovely bridge over the river bed on your right (do NOT cross the bridge).

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,277 ft

Stay left

Cross over the cattle grid and stay on the main track. (Ignore the path which bears right downhill, and a few metres later also ignore the one that breaks off to the left). In one kilometre you'll pass through a gateway and over a cattle grid alongside the 'Cortijo de Los Calabazales' farm buildings. Continue along the track.

Information board

The track begins by turning off the rural road near the hotel entrance 'Cortijo Fuente Marchal'. After a few metres, there is a large sign for the 'Pantano de Montejaque' sendero (footpath). Set back beyond the olive grove on your left is the impressively abrupt 'El Hacho' limestone mountain.

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,295 ft

Stay left

You'll pass a viewing area (Mirador) looking out across the fields which slope down to an area which can occasionally contain the seasonal Montejaque reservoir, it only holds water after prolonged rainfall. Stay on the main track – ignore the path which bears right downhill.

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,432 ft

Right at fork

There is sometimes a chain strung across this section of the track to limit vehicle access, simply walk around it.

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,591 ft

Right

Fork right here on the lesser used narrow path passing under some oak trees and dropping down to cross through the river bed, here the path becomes more obvious again.

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,588 ft

Bear right

Cross the river here, and bear immediately right keeping close to the river. In this area, you can appreciate the smooth sandstone rock.

PictographWaypoint Altitude 2,605 ft

Cross stream

Just after crossing the river bed for the final time, go through the small metal gate on your right, bear right past the stables and continue uphill to reach the rear terrace of the hotel Tambor del Llano.
