Five kilometers later, continuing up the slope of Hawk Mountain, and surrounding the summit without reaching its top (until 1979 the AT did go over the top) is the Hawk Mountain Shelter, a shelter built in 1994 by the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club , and that has space for 12 people (with a mezzanine), cables to protect the food, latrine, fire ring, and a small nearby stream from which you can drink water.
