Itinerary description
Day 1 of a two day loop. Could be done in one long day (~20 miles total). Day 1 for us was just over 11 miles.
Parked at the Turkeypen Ridge trail head on a chilly Saturday morning. Low 30's all day, but happily no precipitation. Throughout the day, there were a couple of minor rock-hop crossings, but no real stream crossings of note.
We started with a quick 0.2 mile out/back to Finley Cane Trail since we had not covered that connector when we had previously hiked Finley Cane (190915). This would not be needed if you're just doing the loop hike, but if you're attempting to hike the "900 miles" of GSMNP trails, you'll have to get this segment at some point.
We then followed Lead Cove Trail up hill for around 1.8 miles, until it ends on Bote Mountain Trail. Turned right on Bote Mountain, and followed up hill another 3 miles until it ends on the Appalachian Trail. Patchy snow on the ground once we were above ~4000' feet, but the trail was in good condition.
Turning right/south on the AT, we did a quick side-trail 0.2 side trail on Eagle Creek Trail to the Spence Field Shelter (and privy). Had a quick lunch at the shelter. After lunch, returned the 0.2 miles back to the AT, and continued another 3 miles on to Russell Field Trail. (The Russell Field Shelter is at the intersection of the AT and this trail.)
Turned right down the Russell Field Trail, around 2.5 miles until we reached Campground 10 to stay for the night. Nice campground we had to our selves. There are a couple of good tent sites, and nearby water. No privy.
