Itinerary description
Did this as a shuttle hike, starting at Road Prong Trailhead on Clingmans Dome Road. Note: Clingmans Dome Road closes for the winter months, usually in late November / early December.
Followed Road Prong Trail ~2.5 miles downhill to Chimney Tops trail. From there, uphill around 1 mile to Chimney Tops itself.At chimney Tops, there is a nice overlook area with great views and benches. Just beyond, the trail is officially closed and fenced off, though the trail does continue on beyond the gate. If you decide to bypass the gate, the climb to the top of Chimney Tops involves a very steep / dangerous bouldering ascent.
Returned back down Chimney Tops Trail, and then continued until it ends at the parking area on Newfound Gap Road.
