Itinerary description
One way (with car shuttle) hike up Laurel Falls trail to the fire tower, and down Cove Mountain Trail to the Sugarland's Visitor Center. We left a car at the Cove Mt trail head parking area, and drove from there to the Laurel Falls trail head. You'll want to start early; we didn't park until ~9am and Laurel Falls lot was already crowded with tourists.
Laurel Falls trail was 4 miles of steady uphill. The falls themselves are within the first 1 1/2 miles of the parking / trail head. After that, you lose most of the day hikers. At the 3 mile mark, pass the Little Green Brier trail... we've been to that intersection from the other direction, when we did a loop on the Green Brier trails:

At the 4 mile mark, Laurel Falls trail ends at the Cove Mountain Trail intersection. Need to make a left on the trail for a quick 0.1 mile look at the old Fire Tower (door was locked, so couldn't climb it!).
From the fire tower, it's back in the other direction for 8 1/2 miles (mostly down, but a few bumps in the road) back to the Cove Mountain trail head near the Sugarland's Visitor Center. Pass Cataracts Falls right near the end.

Bear!
Really, he's there, even if it's hard to see in the picture. There were also a bunch of fat turkeys around here.
