Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), passing through the state of New Hampshire (United States), from south to north, from the intersection of the trail with the NH-112 route, in Kinsman Notch, to Eliza Brook Shelter, inside the White Mountain National Forest.
The stage corresponds to section 5.2, according to the official distribution of trail stages, in the state of New Hampshire.
The day is gray, and with rain forecast, which is not precisely an advantage when facing a route through the White Mountains.
Throughout the day we follow the path of the Kinsman Ridge Trail, which partially shares its itinerary with the Appalachian Trail.
The coincidence of several paths on the same path is not unusual. It often occurs in places where the richness and variety of the landscape allow for very interesting alternative routes. But what is no longer so common, and yet it happens in this area of the White Mountain National Forest, is that in the signposting of some intersections the name of the Appalachian Trail is omitted and the name of the minor trails is indicated exclusively. For more, the authors of such incomprehensible omission also dispense with indicating the north or south direction of the path.
Nothing to object to the fact that the names of the small paths that coincide with the Appalachian Trail in some section are maintained, but omitting any reference to the main path seems simply an unjustifiable nonsense of some "great strategist."
Be that as it may, we must take this circumstance into account, and study each stage well before starting, if we want to avoid the risk of getting lost and having to turn around every two times, since in the same day the TA can Get to follow several different trails.
Fortunately, the white paint signage has been fairly well maintained (at least at the crossroads), and that helps a lot in the moment of uncertainty that occurs at each intersection.
We begin the journey in the large parking lot located at the confluence of the trail with the NH-112 route, in Kinsman Notch, at the foot of Mt. Moosilauke, and from the first meters the road is very steep and rocky.
The difficulty of the ascent to the East Peak - Mt. Wolf (3,478 feet), is not so much in the modest, although respectable 1,600-foot drop between Kinsman Notch and the top, but in the continuous ascents and descents through rock , combined with water, mud, roots and moss. Everything at once.
Naturally, it is necessary to climb, constantly grasping branches, roots and stones, trying not to slip, since recent rain has dampened the surfaces of rocks, wood and logs placed in some sections.
With all this, the pace of progress of the march decreases considerably. If with less humidity, in the White Mountains it is no longer possible to advance more than 1.5 miles per hour, with a wet and slippery terrain, it is difficult to exceed the mile per hour, and this is necessary to take it into account at the time of programming the times of each tour.
The vegetation is abundant, with a predominance of firs, cedars and other conifers, and also of maple, beech, birch trees .... This wooded area is very humid, so many rocks and tree trunks are covered with mosses and lichens .
