Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), as it passes through the state of Vermont (United States), from south to north. From the trail's intersection with Stony Brook Road, in Notown, to the intersection with Route VT-12, near Woodstock, VT.
The stage corresponds to section 3.1, according to the official distribution of sections of the Appalachian Trail, as it passes through Vermont.
We reach the head of the trail through an unpaved track, Stony Brook Road, which starts from the VT-107 route. It can be traveled with conventional vehicles, but the final section has quite a few potholes and it is necessary to go very slowly. At the point where the Appalachian Trail crosses the trail, there is a small parking space for two vehicles, although there is room for more cars a little earlier.
We cross the Stony Brook, through a recently rebuilt wooden bridge, since the old bridge was washed away during the tropical storm ¨Irene¨, and we begin the journey, ascending, through a forest area owned by the state of Vermont, known as the Less Newall Wildlife Management Area.
The ascent to Bull Hill has an elevation gain of approximately 1,200 feet, quite gradual, considering that it is spread over 5 km, but there are still some relatively steep sections.
The day is dry and sunny, and we do not find water or mud on the trail.
After the descent from Bull Hill, shortly before crossing Chateauguay Road, the trail leaves the Less Newall Wildlife Management Area and continues its progression through a green corridor that climbs towards a small hill (2,640 feet), from which you can contemplate a beautiful view of Lakota Lake and the White Mountains, limited by the branches of the trees. It is the highest point of the stage.
Barely three kilometers from this hill, and taking a lateral detour of about 300 meters, we reach another small elevation known as The Lookout (2,320 feet) located outside the green corridor of the AT, in an area of private property. There is a nice cabin installed there, with an observation platform that allows a 360º view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The cabin is spacious (it has enough space to accommodate 15 or more hikers) and can be freely used by all hikers, even for overnight stays. It has an indoor fireplace, but no nearby water supply. The owners allow their use, under the exclusive responsibility of the users, and request the collaboration of all to keep the facilities clean and in good condition.
Descending from this cabin and overlook, the AT continues through a wide, flat old road, which served farms in the area. crossing a fork that leads to the Green Gate Road, until you reach a small hill known as Sawyer Hill, with limited views to the southwest, of Killington and Piko Peak, from the point called Don's Rock, at The Pinnacle.
From Don's Rock, the trail begins a gradual descent (in some sections not so gradual) of about 7 km, towards its intersection with route VT-12, crossing in its last section several pastures and private farms, from which you can enjoy a beautiful and clear view of the surrounding mountains.
The parking lot of the final point of this stage is located on the edge of route VT-12, semi-hidden by the gap between the highway and the Gulf Stream, right next to a modern wooden bridge that crosses this stream.
