Route along the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Vermont (United States), from south to north, from the Big Branch Shelter, on the banks of the homonymous river, to the intersection of the trail with the Wallingford Gulf Road, VT-140, all within the Green Mountain National Forest.
The stage corresponds to the first part of section 6 and the second part of section 5 of the Appalachian Trail, according to the official distribution of stages of this trail in the state of Vermont, and also coincides in its layout with that of a section of the Long Trail, which is the oldest long distance trail in the United States, created between 1910 and 1930, with a total length of 438 km. (always through the state of Vermont), from the boundary of this state with Massachusetts, in the vicinity of the town of Williamstown, MA, to very close to the Canadian border, in North Troy, Vermont.
We start the stage at dawn, at the Big Branch Shelter, a shelter located a couple of kilometers away from the intersection of the Appalachian Trail with USFS-10 - Danby-Landgrove Road. The route of the path runs, in this first section, to the west, and almost parallel to the course of the Big Branch, with very little slope.
A few meters after reaching USFS-10, the AT turns north, and for three more kilometers, also gently sloping, follows a path very close to Little Black Branch, to Little Rock Pond, beautiful lake or reservoir surrounded by an exuberant vegetation, in whose shore is the Little Rock Pond Shelter, refuge with an original design and capacity for eight occupants.
