Route along the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Vermont (United States), from south to north, from the William B. Douglas Shelter, to Mad Tom Notch at the intersection of the trail with the track USFS 21, Peru, VT, all inside the Green Mountain National Forest.
The stage corresponds to the first part of section 7 and to the third part of section 6 of the Appalachian Trail, according to the official distribution of stages of this trail in the state of Vermont, and also coincides in its layout with that of a section of the Long Trail, which is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States, created between 1910 and 1930, with a total length of 438 km. (always through the state of Vermont), from the boundary of this state with Massachusetts, in the vicinity of the town of Williamstown, MA, to very close to the Canadian border, in North Troy, Vermont.
We hike along with a group of mountaineers from the Hudson Valley Hikers, led by veteran guide Jason A. Taormina.
We start the tour early, immediately after having breakfast, raising the camp the night before at the William B. Douglas Shelter, located 800 meters from the path, in a side detour.
Shortly after this detour, and after crossing a small torrent and a wooden bridge, we went for a mile towards the west following a wide track, currently of forest use, known as Old Rootville Road.
Just opposite the point where the AT turns to the north, and with almost no signaling, there is a short branch identified with blue markers, which leads to a rocky viewpoint located 50 meters from the track, called Prospect Rock (2.079 feet). From this viewpoint you can see a beautiful panoramic view towards the town of Manchester and the Mt. Equinox (3,848 feet).
