Tour of the Appalachian Trail ( Appalachian Trail ), as it passes through the state of Vermont (United States), from south to north, from the intersection of the trail with Stratton-Arlington Road (Kelley Stand Road), to the William B. Douglas Shelter, within the Green Mountain National Forest.
The stage corresponds to the second part of section 7 of the Appalachian Trail, according to the official distribution of stages of this trail in the state of Vermont, and also coincides in its layout with that of a section of the Long Trail, which is the trail Oldest long-haul train in the United States, created between 1910 and 1930, with a total length of 438 km. (always through the state of Vermont), from the border of this state with Massachusetts, in the vicinity of the town of Williamstown, MA, to very close to the border with Canada, in North Troy, Vermont.
We did this hike together with a group of hikers from the Hudson Valley Hikers, led by veteran guide Jason A. Taormina.
The route has an easy route, well signposted, gradual in the ascents and descents, and with very little rock. Of course, there are plenty of tree roots crossing the path, and we also find the odd section with a lot of mud, without the protection of the classic wooden planks that are used in many places to avoid the passage through humid areas.
For the first four miles, the Appalachian Trail gradually climbs the side of Stratton Mountain, reaching the top of its southern peak, located at 3,936 feet. In it there is an old forest watchtower, built in 1914, and renovated in 2011, currently used as an observation platform.
From this splendid viewpoint, located in the central area of the Green Mountain National Forest, you can enjoy a 360º panoramic view: To the north, very close, the north peak of Stratton Mountain, with the chairlift facilities of its popular ski resort. skiing, and much further afield, the Killington Peak; to the southeast, Mt. Monadnock; to the northeast, Mt. Ascutney; to the southwest, Glastenbury Mountain, over which the AT also passes; to the south, the Sommerset Reservoir and Mt. Snow; and to the west the Taconic Range, with Mt. Equinox.
