If you are into bushwalking and visiting Longreach this has got to be a 'must do' excursion.
Short Description:
Steeped in history and made famous by Australia's most well known cattle-duffer Harry Readford, the spectacular outback landscape stretches out before you. This outcrop (mesa) in the middle of nowhere gives you a panoramic 360° view of the desolate flatness of outback Queensland.
Getting there:
From Longreach take the Landsborough Highway north across the Thomson River and after a further 2km turn right (signposted) onto Longreach Silsoe Road (Cramsie Muttaburra Road), past the Sales Yard and then right onto Muttaburra Westside Road (Straight Road) for a 4WD dirt road trip of 40km to the lookout.
Maps:
None found.
Route/Trail notes:
Park at the base and then climb direct to the top on the path. Place another stone on the cairn before descending the way you came or down the far side and around the base back to your vehicle.
Permits/Costs:
None.
Other References/Comments:
Whilst there, boil your billy for a cuppa, or circumnavigate the hill, which is about 1km and takes half an hour.
Further information on Captain Starlight .
On your way back to Longreach, on the left hand side just before the Sales Yard, is Lily Lagoon which when the water is running is worth a visit.
