Itinerary description
This hike is described in more detail as walk 21 in the Dutch book "Deltas wandelgids. Sicilie en de Liparische Eilanden" (it might deviate somewhat from the description). It is a 12 km walk through an area with old lava flows and vulcanic cones, as well as forests. Casa Zampini is a modern refuge. The pagghiarus are old refuges traditionally used by foresters (see photos).
You arrive to the start by car via the lava road from Bronte (see photo).

Those are native cyclamen. I found them near Monte Ruvolo in 2010 and all over Sicily. If you can see this foto, they grow even on lava in the shade.

I loved this place! The dry oak woodlands remind me of where I live in northern California. It's easy hiking and if I got confused I knew I could always climb up on the lava above the trees and find Mt. Etna to get my directions. But I wasn't expecting heavy fog and so near sunset on an October afternoon I was lost. On that mid October afternoon there was no one else there. I was lucky to find the Corpo Forrestal. 3 guys picking mushrooms (instead of posting trail signs lioke they we supposed to be doing) : ) They took me back to my car just as it got dark.
Thanks for clearing that up! https://nl.wikiloc.com/routes-outdoor/12-km-hike-on-the-1763-lava-fields-569920#wp-569924/photo-160341
Joe, thanks for your comments!
Alstublieft!
It is Cyclamen hederifolium ( Ivy leaf cyclamen in English)

Shaun, I actually did this walk in late September (September 30, 2009, starting around 10am), and it was great!

Changing sceneries, easy to walk but everything but boring!
Looking forward to walk it again.
Orangutanga, thanks for your review! Glad you liked it.
Great way to see lava fields and Etna. Section through the woods a great relief on a hot day- but rather tedious if not!
Thanks for your review and comments Bjfields! Section through woods could be interesting for some also at cooler weather, with the mushrooms and the forests plants, if you are interested... (probably more in spring and autumn)
