Tour of sections 10.2, 9, 8 and 7.2 of the Appalachian Trail , from south to north, passing through the state of New York (United States), from the Bear Mountain Inn, on the banks from Hessian Lake, to Dennytown Road, through the hills of Denning Hill and Canopus Hill.
At the beginning of the stage, the trail surrounds the Hessian Lake, located at the foot of Bear Mountain, and passes through the Bear Mountain Museum and a small zoo. In the route that appears in the route, we have slightly deviated from the official layout, since the entrance to the zoo was closed, and we have descended to the bank of the Hudson River, giving a small detour that forces us to cross the railroad track and climb cross country uphill (not recommended).
Returning to the official route of the AT, we pass through the north end of the zoo and cross the Bear Mountain Bridge, in the direction of Anthony's Nose, a hill that dominates the Hudson River from the east side of the bridge, and a few meters beyond, in a detour of the 9D route, begins a rapid climb up the slope of the mountain, always to the east, leaving aside the detour to the Camp Smith Trail that leads to the Manitou Mountain, passing the top of Anthony's Nose , from which there is a magnificent panoramic view of the Hudson Valley and surroundings.
The official layout of this section of the AT from Hessian Lake to the referred diversion, followed by a circular tour of the top of Anthony's Nose, can be found at the following link.
The trail continues with a slight descent to the east, until you reach a camping area known as Hemlock Springs Camps, and just beyond it crosses the South Mountain Pass (also called Manitou Road).
The rest of the stage layout is relatively mountainous (with a maximum altitude of approximately 1,000 feet), and without large elevations, but there are many small hills and hills with frequent ups and downs. Among them, Denning Hill (900 feet) stands out, from whose proximity you can see a beautiful panoramic view to the south (on clear days you can also see the skyline of New York City) and Canopus Hill (820 feet).
At the end of the stage, next to the intersection of the Appalachian Trail with Dennytown Road, there is ample parking and a booth with a drinking water tap, in use throughout the year except in the cold season.
