stage 110

⇐ Link to previous stage: 109 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NEW JERSEY - Section 3 - From High Point State Park to NJ-284 - Unionville
⇒ Link to next leg: 111 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NEW YORK / NEW JERSEY - Section 12.2 and 13 - NY, and 1 - NJ - Wildcat Shelter to Wawayanda State Park

Tour of sections 2 and 1.2 of the Appalachian Trail, as it passes through the state of New Jersey, from south to north.

The stage runs between the AT parking lot on NJ-284, 0.9 miles south of downtown Unionville, NY, and the Wawayanda State Park offices, very close to the Warwick Turnpike, passing through two small peaks: Pochuck Mountain (1,194 feet) and Wawayanda Mountain (1,340 feet).

For the first six kilometers, the Appalachian Trail crosses the Wallkill Valley plain, largely occupied by the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, one of two federal nature and wildlife protection areas, through which it passes the path.

In this area, as in the Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania and in the Virginia Valley near Raonoke, the AT crosses the Great Appalachian Valley, an important geological formation comprising a series of connected valleys, including New York and Alabama. Here, the geological action of the glaciers is evident, both in the rock formations and in the fertile soils of the Vernon Valley, on which an ancient glacial lake once sat.

After crossing Lake Wallkill Road (Liberty Corners Road), the trail climbs a short but steep incline towards the top of Pochuck Mountain, a rock formation made up of metamorphic gneiss (containing the same minerals as granite: quartz, feldspar and mica, but distributed in bands or layers), and which represents the highest and dividing point of the Vernon Valley and Kittatinny Valley basins.

Near the top is the Pochuck Mountain Shelter, built in 1988-89, which has space for six people. There are no springs in the area, but water can be obtained from a house near the path, shortly before starting the ascent.

At the crest of Pochuck Mountain, the AT passes through a spectacular overlook, with views west of Wallkill Valley to High Point and the Kittatinny and Shawangunk Mountains.

The descent from the top of Pochuck Mountain towards the valley is long and gradual, and from the intersection of the trail with NJ-517 / Mc Afee Glendwood Road, we reach an extensive marshy surface, criss-crossed by a multitude of streams and rivers, the Pochuck Swamp, also known as Pochuck Quagmire, on which a very long wooden platform or walkway was built, supported by pillars over the swamp itself, which allows water to circulate under the platform, during periods of flooding, and is used for the transit of walkers, athletes and hikers, during all times of the year.

This wooden structure, whose construction lasted seven years of work, is considered one of the most expensive and complicated works of infrastructure on the Appalachian Trail, and its inauguration, in 2002, allowed the elimination of the trail's layout, its old step to through highways and byways of the Vernon Valley.

As part of this set, there is also a wooden suspension bridge, built in 1996 over the Pochuck Creek, with a length of 146 feet and a height of 14 feet, which also allows to face the important and periodic rises in the water level. in this area.

After traversing Vernon Warwick Road - NJ-94, the trail enters the very rocky base of Wawayanda Mountain, which is very reminiscent of sections of Pennsylvania, and begins a steep ascent to the summit, passing some sections that have been groomed with stone steps.

Already at the crest of Wawayanda Mountain (1,340 feet), the Appalachian Trail runs with low elevations, almost flat, for about 6 km. more, until reaching the detour towards the Wawayanda State Park offices, which have a magnificent free parking lot, and with permanent surveillance, where the stage ends.
