Stage 108

⇐ Link to the previous stage: 107 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NEW JERSEY - Section 5.1 and 4.2 - From Battermilk Falls to Gren Anderson Shelter
⇒ Link to the next stage: 109 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NEW JERSEY - Section 3 - From High Point State Park to NJ-284 - Unionville

Section 4.1 of the Appalachian Trail, as it passes through the state of New Jersey, traveled south to north, from mile AT-1324.8 to mile AT-1336.1, measured from Springer, Georgia.

The stage begins at the Gren Anderson Shelter and ends at High Point, at the junction with Route 23, where the High Point State Park offices are located. The state park has a small parking lot for visitors who come to the offices, and another parking lot, much larger, about 500 meters away, usable by all hikers, free of charge, prior registration of the vehicle in the offices.

The trail runs on a relatively flat path, high above the crest of the Kittatinny Mountain, in the Stokes State Forest, with beautiful panoramic views to the north and south of the route.

Among other points of interest, it is worth noting the spectacular view that can be seen from the Sunrise Mountain (1,653 feet), whose top (the highest in the section) is an open pavilion, an ideal spot for bird watching.

From this place you can see, to the east, the New Jersey Highlands and Walkill Valley, and to the west the Delaware River and Poconos.

The views to the northeast are also spectacular, in Dutch Shoe Rock, from where you can see the High Point and Walkill Valley.

We made the tour of this stage with a mountaineering / hiking group from the New York-New Jersey section of the Appalachian Mountain Club, directed by Frank Zarb.

The profile of the stage, without significant ascents or descents, in an area that is not particularly stony, or difficult to walk, allows you to describe your route as easy.

Although there are no shortages of stone, sometimes reminiscent of the Pennsylvania crossing, the path is quite flat
