Tour of the Appalachian Trail (Appalachian Trail), as it passes through the state of North Carolina, United States), from south to north), from the Muskrat Creek Shelter to the Carter Gap Shelter.
The stage corresponds, with sections 10.1 and 9.2, according to the official distribution of sections of the Appalachian Trail, in the states of Georgia and North Carolina, and runs through the mountain range known as Blue Ridge, within the immense Nantahala National Forest .
The rainy day before caused many mountaineers to seek shelter in the shelters, and even decided to take a rest day. The double roofs of the tents of those of us who did not have space inside a shelter were soaked, and the forecasts for the new day were not optimistic, so we decided to break camp very early, before dawn, and walk to the Carter Gap Shelter, a refuge located at the end of the stage, with the purpose of arriving early, and the hope of finding a place in it, and being able to dry clothes, the tent, and avoid another night in the rain.
Muskrat Gap Shelter. Start of the stage. The photograph was taken the previous rainy afternoon, since the stage started before dawn.
The weather in the early hours of the morning was a continuation of the day before, and seemed to confirm the worst forecasts, but as the hours progressed the day cleared up, and finally the rain stopped and the sun came out.
Rocky and mossy area, on the eastern slope of Subida bordering the top of Yellow Mountain (1,510 m.)
During practically the entire stage, the trail runs at an altitude of over 4,500 feet, a very high elevation for what is usual on the Appalachian Trail, and the most important peak of the route is Standing Indian Mountain , the highest peak of the Southern Nantahala Wilderness , with an elevation of 5,498 feet, located about 350 meters from the trail, and offering an extraordinary view of the Georgia Blue Ridge.
At 350 m., in a side detour, the summit of Standing Indian Mountain (5,498 ft.)
With the occasional small hill without relevance, the Carter Gap is reached, where the day ends. There are two shelters installed there: the oldest, with capacity for six people, and the modern one, with capacity for eight. Getting up early, and the improvement of the weather, allowed us to have enough space to spend the night in the shelter of one of them.
Very close to both refuges there is a good source of water supply.

Un buen recorrido. Bonitos paisajes, incluso en invierno
