A lovely walk in the rain from Black Bear Campground to Portage Lake on a fully accessible path under the mountains and glaciers of the Portage Valley .
The entire route actually starts at Moose Flats Day use area, a couple of miles earlier; we left from Black Bear Campground, because we were camped there.
The path runs gently through a mixed forest of cottonwood, sitka alder, willow, and sitka spruce, crossing several streams, always on well-maintained walkways and bridges.
At the end of the route we arrive at Portage Lake, a large lake created by the retreat of the glacier, which can still be seen at the bottom of the lake. Next to the lake is the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center , with an exhibition and a lot of information about the trails and nature of the valley. We did the return by the same path.
