near Sarmizegetusa, Județul Hunedoara (România)

Itinerary description

Four and half days in the middle of June, lost in Munții Ṭarcu's beauty. First half was unmarked trail (but easy to follow when you have GPS or general sense of where you are going) from Sarmizegtusa to crossway beneath Baicu peak. Second part was red sign trail to Căleanu and Țarcu peaks. Finished in Borlova from which we caught immediate hitch to Caransebeș. To get to Sarmizegetusa, we took bus for Hațeg and asked the driver to drop us at Sarmi (which was not a problem for him, however, we paid the full fare to Hațeg).

There is no food to be bought along the whole trek. Water resources were common in June. Bear precautions are strongly advised.

There is lot of shepherds with number of shepherd's dogs in the first part and also between Ṭarcu and Cabana Meteo Cuntu. At first, we were trying to bypass the dogs unseen, but it is not always that easy. At one point we got to a cliff and had not much where to go from there. Two dogs (to be fair, quite small ones) barked at us when we tried to scare them back - it was surprisingly easy - you can throw just really small rocks to scare them of or take your treking poles to one hand and swing it. The dogs react on this and move back. However, I would always try to move around the herd, rather than going right to them. Some dogs will not move back or stop barking, but will keep their distance.

V pohode hospudka, dostali sme k pivu vytecnou domaci tvarohovou buchtu jako pozornost. / We got some beer here along with homemade cottage cheese pie on the house.

Koupačka a brod / Bathing spot and ford

Supr koupacka, brod kousek nad ni, dalo se prijemne prejit. / Nice bathing of unknown river going down the mountains and easy to cross ford.

Caransebeș: Levný ubytko / Cheap hotel **

Platili sme 30lei za osobu/noc - sprcha s hajzlikem v combu, ale da se, telka, postele i povleceni bez problemu, v okne sitka proti komarum. Zadnej zalostnej stav, rano se da odejit bez checkoutu (radsi to ale oznamit predem). / We paid 30lei per one person per night - there was shower-toilet combo, just ok, TV, beds with clean sheets, in the window mosquito reticle. Overal not in bad shape, in the morning you can leave without checkout (but prefferably with advance notice).

Studna na prijezdove ceste u domku - kdyz sme tam byli, nikdo tam nebyl. Kousek pod studnout vytejka voda - pili sme bez filtrovani. / There is a well near by a house - while there, there was no one. Two meter below the well there is water coming from ground - we drank it without filtering.

Vedle silnice, vypada to zle, ale po pouziti vodniho filtru Sawyer absolutne bez problemu, ani to nechutna spatne. Nicmene je dost vody i na Muntele Mic. / This is next to road, looks pretty bad, but we used Sawyer filter abolutely without problem, didn't even taste odd. However, there is plenty of water on Muntele Mic.
