The "Upper City", in Italian Città alta, is the one that is steep on the mountain and is the oldest part of the city, totally walled, it has historical buildings and palaces and important tourist attractions. While the "Lower City", in Italian Città bassa, is modern, almost all developed at the beginning of the 20th century, rich in shops and wide boulevards that are very special for walking.
The two parts of the City are connected by a funicular (tram), one of the oldest in Italy, which connects both parts in less than 5 minutes.
