Itinerary description
A long tour, for which an E-MTB is required. There are some difficult spots, which also can be either avoided by a little detour, or require the bike to be pushed.
From Kalterherberg, descend to the Kalterherberg station on the RAVeL (Vennbahn). On the RAVeL, climb to Sourbrodt station. The following section to the 'Russian Cross' is partly single trail, sometimes muddy, over roots and small bridges. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, continue on the main road until you meet our GPS trail again at the outskirts of Sourbrodt village.
From the end of Sourbrodt, follow trails between the forests and the moorland, first until Signal de Botrange, the highest point of Belgium. Continue along the moorland up to Baraque Michel, which has a restaurant. Find the way from the parking lot to the little chapel, and continue on a graveled trail to the cross de fiancés.
Here, a long descent to Jalhay begins. Watch out at any intersection, as a wrong turn will lead you way down into valleys which you do not want to retract. Eventually, you reach the hamlet of Les Disons, from which you have to climb up to Jalhay. You have done slightly more than half of the trip.
Continue to Herbiester, on good gradients. Cross the N68 highway which connects Botrange with Eupen, and climb up up the Venn again. Continuing east, skirt the moorlands and descend into the valley of the Hill stream. This part can be tricky when wet; less experienced riders may want to push their bikes for a few meters. Cross the Hill over two bridges; this is also a good place to rest.
Our trail continues along the edge of the Venn. This may appear longer than a shortcut straight to the village of Küchelscheid, but it avoids another steep ascent, and is much faster. The last kilometers to Küchelscheid are easy.
