Itinerary description
Long xmas ride through the hills of Nafpaktia Oros. I will deffinately make this a tradition: a long road bike ride with lots of climbs for a Xmas apetite :-P
Starting from Patra and across the Rio-Antirio bridge towards Nafpaktos. This part is a nice warmup. It's a flat section perfect for getting into nice rythm before real climbing starts. After passing Nafpatkos, we followed local road in direction to Ano Chora along Mornos river. It's another part of warming up with easy to moderate (1-3%) incline. Still fast and comfortable at early point of the ride. The only negative was constant head wind...
At 35th kilometer, we passed small bridge and real work started: long constant 7% climb for next 13k! It's also started to get warmer with sun coming up so we started to open all our winter clothes. Views were great and climb didnt seem so bad :-P
From Palaiopirgos until Simos, the ride was a bit more flat and we could spin our tired legs a bit faster getting some cadence recovery. Then short but steap climb to the pass and first climb of the day (935m) was done :-D
What was suppose to be fun descent to Kotsanos river, became a very slow and dangerous, full brakes on slide... all because of icy road :-/ Bummer! Quick stop for photos at the bridge and off we went for a second serious climb of the day, to Platanos, much shorter but also a bit steaper and already with significant fatigue in the legs.
Second bigger stop in Platanos next to the spring. Lots of calories and water refill before continuing to Thermo. First with fairly fast section to Achladokastro, then fast and fun (no ice hear) descent to Evinos river and finally tiring climb to Thermo. The last was not steep at all, neither long, but the legs were already dead and it seemed like ages.
Third bigger stop in Thermo. Again lots of calories and water. Morale was a bit low, but the rest helped and we were ready for climb towards Analipsi. And it went ok. Before we knew we were speeding down to Chani Mpania and climbing again to Pitsineika, which had a huge psychological value since it was the last climb of the day :-DDD Fun descent, to the bridge (with tail wind! finally!) and back in Patras.
~9h all together! Not bad :-D
