Itinerary description
Cycling from Vila Nova De Gaia to Almendra along the National 222 road by the River Douro. We left early from Peso da Régua to avoid the big heatwave (occasionally 32-35 ºC) on the most challenging climb of the day, from Pinhão to São João da Pesqueira. At least I thought it will be...
Turned out to be that it is not that big of a deal as I remembered, although it is 14km long and has a fair amount of elevation. At 10:30, we were already at the top of that hill, having the first stout beer of the day, with an excellent ham and cheese sandwich.
We arrived at the peak of the day at Vila Nova de Foz Côa, and then things become a bit more complicated...
We got hit by an extended heatwave in a place that is already known as a furnace. But we managed to go the extra mile and hit km 223 at the end of the N222.
The goal was to go back to Foz Côa and go downhill to Pocinho and catch the train at 17:12 to go home. We managed everything, only the train didn't come. Hours passed, no one knew anything, massive confusion at the train station. So what to do? I called my wife. She drove 180km to pick us up and bring us home. I love you, Sweetheart!
It was a great adventure, with an excellent company in a beautiful place called Portugal and the Douro Valley.
