Itinerary description
Altamente recomendable!
A classic amongst Santiago's Cyclists. The first part is a continuous uphill with difficult sections after crossing the river though the average incline is moderate: the route follows the valley, and eventually runs parallel to the river. The views of the Cordillera de los Andes, and in particular of the Cerro del Plomo. are spectacular. Traffic is moderate though one feels relatively safe. The second part, which starts at Curva 0 (curve zero), is a sequence of uphill hairpins with moderate incline (5-8%). One gets to Curva 15 at Yerba Loca where it's possible to take a break. The third part is the most difficult, in continuous uphill with ramps of up to 10-12% and several series of hairpins at 5-8%. One arrives at Curva 40 at the turn for Valle Nevado. One goes left towards the small town of Farellones. We took a long break at Tata Cruz's small and informal restaurant where we ate scrambled eggs and palta (avocado) sandwich on the deck, while enjoying the sunshine. Wonderful! The downhill part is exciting but quite technical, thus demanding attention due to the sharp turns, the incline and the traffic. The whole ride is difficult, both physically and mentally; it's a continuous 33 kms. uphill with some sections with significant incline. It's a scenic experience that increases as one climbs up along the Cordillera. Highly recommended!
