Itinerary description

Cycling tour around the city of Aachen. I rode the tour on a racing bike, but there are some stretches semi-paved (marked with waypoints) and on (city center) cobble-stoned roads, forcing you to slow down. German cycling paths often turn semi-paved unexpectedly, and although it is generally possible to ride those on a racing bicycle, you have to watch out and slow down, especially when it rains. The route has plenty (approximately 1100 meters) of climbing, such as the Lousberg, the Rohrberg at Seffent, the Vaalserberg, and the climb into the Aachener Wald from Preuswald.
The tour starts near the center, where you can park for free, and starts off with a touristic sight seeing tour on the Lousberg (viewing point) and then to the center with the Rathaus and the Dom. In the town center you can ride your bike on most places, although in some shopping streets only part of the time, and watch out for the pedestrians. From the center the tour goes north and then against the clock around Aachen. The route takes you via a.o. the three-border point (Vaalserberg), through Netherlands and Belgium, the Aachener Wald (forest), the medieval town of Kornelimünster, the viewing point at the Haarener Kreuz, and the Worm valley. Route Aachen/ Laurensberg/ Seffent/ Vaalserquartier/ 3-border point/ Vaals/ Lemiers/ Holset/ Wolfhaag/ Gemmenich/ Kelmis/ Hergenrath/ Aachener Wald/ Kornelimünster/ Freund/ Atsch/ Verlautenheide/ Haarener Kreuz/ Haaren/ Kohlscheid/ Aachen.

Dom Aachen

You pass the famous Dom in Aachen where Charlemagne is buried. The streets and courtyard are mostly accessible to cyclists but watch out for pedestrians and wet cobblestones.

Rathaus Aachen

You pass the Market in Aachen with the beautiful Rathaus. The square and the streets here can mostly be accessed by cyclists but watch out for pedestrians and wet cobblestones.

Semi-paved road 1

The last 300 meters of the climb to the Vaalserberg (3-border point) are semi-paved. The climb from this side of the Vaalserberg has no traffic in contrast with the climb from Vaals.

Semi-paved road 2

The mostly downhill road through the forest turns into a split road for some 2 km.

Semi-paved road 3

About 750 m of semi-paved split road.

Semi-paved road 4

2.2 km of semi-paved cycling path along the Worm river. Can be busy with pedestrians.

Semi-paved road 5

About 700 m semi-paved road. Flat, on the edge of the wooded Worm valley. Suspect that it can be muddy after rain.
