Itinerary description

Nice cycling trip largely on great RAVeL (https://ravel.wallonie.be/en/home.html) cycling paths with only one significant climb, and a few gradual ascents. Great surroundings with woods, moors and quiet countryside. You ride on the RAVeL tracks L45 for 21 km, L47A for 8 km and L48 for 28 km (i.e. 57 of 91 km). These RAVeL tracks are largely on former railway tracks. The Vennbahn (www.vennbahn.eu), or L48 RAVeL, is a widely praised cycling route on a former railway track between Aachen and Troisvierges. The cycling trip is fully paved and suited for a road bike. You can find something to eat and drink in e.g. Waimes, Malmedy, Trois-Ponts, Vielsalm, Rodt, St. Vith, Born, Montenau, and Robertville.
You start at a free parking lot near the reservoir of Robertville (Lac de Robertville), which may fill up early on nice summer days. You cycle across the bridge on the lake and then slowly climb to Bruyères, and then descend to Waimes where you enter the L45 RAVeL and follow this cycling path to the end near Trois-Ponts, passing two tunnels, a quarry, Malmedy and Stavelot, and descending almost all the way. In Trois-Ponts, where the Salm River flows into the Amblève River, you choose an easier version of the Côte des Hézalles via the very quiet Chemin de Bergeval which shares the last 350 meters with the Côte des Hézalles and then continues on to Bergeval and Dairomont, a total ascent of almost 200 meters. You descend back to the Salm valley and continue on the main road to Vielsalm. Here you follow the L47A RAVeL which is not on a former railway track until Petit-Thier, and is undulating a bit, and then continues on the former railway track to Poteau. You climb further on a quiet N675-road towards St. Vith via Rodt. In St. Vith with its onion-domed church you enter the Vennbahn, which takes you all the way back to Robertville. After about 7 km you pass below a railway viaduct in Born, after about 17 km you pass the junction with the L45 in Waimes, and after 23 km the junction with the Vennquerbahn. Near Robertville, you leave the Vennbahn and cycle through the village back towards the parking lot at the lake.

Côte de Bergeval

This climb is parallel to the infamous Côte des Hézalles (https://climbfinder.com/nl/beklimmingen/hezalles), with which it shares the last 350 meters, and then continues on to Bergeval and Dairomont, which stretch is described on the Climbfinder website as the Côte de Saint-Jacques (https://climbfinder.com/nl/beklimmingen/cote-de-saint-jacques). It is not nearly as steep as the Hezalles, but still a good climb.

Reservoir. A bridge leads you across the reservoir. You can only swim at the officially designated swimming area which you see from the bridge at some distance, and this area fills up fast on hot days (take that into account when you plan on taking a swim after your cycling trip).
