Itinerary description

This cycle tour includes quite a lot of climbs, among which famous and strenuous climbs, such as the Stockeu, but also less famous and strenuous climbs, such as Route de Saint-Vith and the Côte de Chevron. This all with a backdrop of wooded hills, pasture, rivers and small towns with abbeys and churches. The route starts at a small free parking in Remouchamps close to the highway turn-off. The foot of all climbs are marked with waypoints, and the waypoints have links to descriptions of the climbs on Climbfinder. You can find something to eat and drink in e.g. Remouchamps, Spa, Hockai, Malmedy, Stavelot, and Trois-Ponts. The route is suited for the road bike. My altitude meter on my GPS was off, and you have to add ~120 (at the start) to ~90 (at the end) meters to get the real altitude. I marked the route difficult due to the total ascent and the various strenous climbs found on this route.
From the start you cycle through the center of Remouchamps and then on towards Spa. Below the highway viaduct you take the turn-off to the climb El Minîre, a quiet climb with steep sections. The climb levels off and you come back to the road to Spa and climb to Hautregard. You then descend to La Reid and start the minor climb of Rue Les Combles. At the top you descend to Winamplanche. From here you continue to Spa, and when you enter the town you directly turn right on the steep Chemin des Moutons. On the top you descend to the center of Spa and then continue on the RAVeL Ligne 44A to Hockai. This RAVeL cycling path on a former railroad has recently been paved. This is a steady climb of almost 11 km at 2.4 % grade average. In Hockai you leave the cycling path and continue on the Route de l'Ancienne Douane to the highest point of the route at 605 meters. You then descend to Mont and on to Malmedy, where you take a look in the center before embarking on the cruelly steep (average grade 13%), albeit short, climb of the Route de Saint-Vith. You climb a bit further to Hédomont and then descend to Bellevaux and on to the Warche River crossing near the hamlet of Warche. Here starts the climb of the Côte de Chevofosse with nice views of the Warche valley. From the top you descend to Masta ( the Mista and Binsta roads were closed during my trip) where you access the RAVeL L45 on a very short gravel path. You leave the cycle path at Stavelot and cycle to the center with the abbey and the cobblestones. After having crossed the Amblève you start the ascent of the famous and steep Stockeu past the monument to Merckx. This is the most strenuous climb of the Liège province. On the top you descend a bit and then climb on to Wanne. From here you descend all the way to Trois-Ponts. In Trois-Ponts, the climb of the Côte de Brume starts, with a steep section directly at the start in the village. The climb ends at the N66 which you descend to Lienne valley. Here the short Côte de Chevron starts with a 22% section. In Chevron you continue to Chession where you descend to the Pouhon valley. Here starts the last climb of the day, the not so difficult Côte de Lorcé. From the top you descend via Havelange and Harzé to Aywaille (nicely long descent) where you take the Voie des Aulnes cycling path along the Amblève back to the start.
