Itinerary description

This is a 13 mile short bike ride, mainly on quiet minor roads, leaving Otley and taking in Pool in Wharfedale, Castley, Weeton and Almscliffe Crag. It is flat until Castley then encounters a few inclines for the rest of the trip, but all in all not too difficult. My elevation gain was 804ft.

I started from the Wharfe Meadows car park, crossed the river and rode through the town centre. If you want refreshments Otley is the only place I found any apart from The Shell garage at Pool in Wharfedale, where I topped up with coffee.

From Otley take the A659 to Pool in Wharfedale, turning left at the Shell garage onto the Harrogate road. Cross the river and in around 400 metres turn left onto the Castley and Weeton road. From here on the ride is all on minor, almost traffic free, roads. The road follows the river to Castley then turns left and up hill all the way to Weeton and Almscliffe Crag.

From Almscliffe Crag there are lovely long distance views across the Wharfe valley. Eventually you reach the B6161, where the route turns left for a short while before turning right onto very minor roads towards Lindley. This takes you down over the river Washburn and on to the B6451 by Farnley Hall.

Turn right here, then it is nearly all downhill back to the start point in Wharfe Meadows Car Park. All in all, a nice ride which took me an hour and a half, but could easily be done in an hour without stops.

We set off from Otley on a clear spring day. Beautiful ride out up to Almscliffe Crag. We got slightly lost after the crag, hence the 4 stars but not a problem. We re-routed & the stunning scenery was well worth it!
