Itinerary description
Draped over the historic and scenic Blue Mountains in northeast Oregon, the Old Emigrant Hill Road spans the
history of stage lines, the Oregon Trail and Interstate 84, as well as covering ground from Ponderosa Pine
forests to the wheat-lands of the lower Palouse Country.
The Old Emigrant Hill Scenic Highway crosses the Blue Mountains in northeastern Oregon very close to the
Oregon Trail. It runs within the vicinity of several parks and has a dramatic descent down Cabbage Hill to
Mission, Oregon that rivals I-84’s decent in both grade and beauty.
The route culminates in the city of Pendleton. Pendleton is rich in heritage and world famous for the original
Pendleton Woolen Mills, along with the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Indian Pageant. Pendleton
also features an Aquatic Center (with slide tubes), a 3-mile bike/walking path along the river, Arts Center,
Oregon East Symphony and the Underground Tours in what was once the red light district of Pendleton. (The
buildings on the tour have been maintained, true to the original state, allowing the visitor to see the sidewalks
and basalt-rock tunnels the way they were constructed pre 1890's.)
